OUR HISTORY

In 1953, brothers of the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity at Bowling Green State University decided they needed another organization to assist them with service projects. The original idea was to establish another service fraternity at the university; however, after several women expressed interest in joining such an organization, plans were made to organize a women's service sorority instead. Since then, the two organizations have shared the same objective of developing friendships and performing service. For this reason, a similar name was chosen for the new community service sorority: Omega Phi Alpha.

Omega Phi Alpha (a.k.a. OPhiA) was founded on June 15, 1967, at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. The sorority now includes thousands of women in 28 collegiate chapters nationwide. It is an organization built by and for strong women who actively serve their communities. OPhiA sisters strive to further the sorority's friendship, leadership, and service principles. As alumnae, members can become lifelong, service-minded leaders. For more information on our founders, visit the Omega Phi Alpha National Headquarters website.

The Omega Chapter was established at Rutgers University in 2000 and rechartered on February 28, 2015. Omega Phi Alpha is an associate of the Rutgers University Panhellenic Council. (Note: We do not participate in Rutgers's Formal Recruitment, and Omega Phi Alpha is not a member of the National Panhellenic Conference.)

Thanks to our founding mothers' vision for the Omega Chapter and our passion for service, Rutgers OPhiA is a 3-star sorority on campus. Our chapter and leadership have received several awards from OPhiA’s National Headquarters, including Outstanding Chapter Officer Awards (incl. President, Secretary, Service Director), Area of Service Awards, the Chapter Excellence Program (Gold Seal), the DM Spirit in Service Award, the Programming Achievement Award, and many more!
